Inches to CM: The Exact Formula (and Why 2.54)

The exact inches-to-centimetres formula, why 2.54 is not an approximation, worked examples with real arithmetic, and answers to the questions people ask most.

Inches and centimetres live side by side in everyday life. A television screen is sold in inches, a piece of fabric is cut in centimetres, a phone specification lists both, and a school ruler usually carries both scales at once. Moving between the two systems is therefore a skill worth getting exactly right, and fortunately it is one of the simplest conversions in measurement: a single multiplication, with a factor that is exact rather than rounded.

Quick answer: multiply inches by 2.54 to get centimetres. So 10 inches × 2.54 = 25.4 cm exactly, and 1 inch = 2.54 cm.
The maths

The Exact Formula

The formula
centimetres = inches × 2.54

That is the whole conversion. There is no second step, no correction factor, and no separate value for different kinds of inch. Whether you are measuring a screen, a bolt, a book, or a person’s height, the same multiplication applies. To go the other way, divide centimetres by 2.54 to get inches: 100 cm ÷ 2.54 = 39.3701 inches.

The reason the formula is so clean is that the inch itself is now defined in metric terms. Since 1959, the inch has not been defined by a physical bar or a royal body part, but by international agreement as exactly 25.4 millimetres, which is the same as 2.54 centimetres. Every inch you measure today is, by definition, 2.54 cm long.

The history

Why Exactly 2.54?

Before the twentieth century, the inch was not quite the same everywhere. Britain, the United States, and other countries using the imperial system each maintained their own standard inch, and the tiny differences between them mattered in precision engineering. A part made to a British inch might not quite fit a machine built to an American inch, which was a real problem as trade and manufacturing became international.

The solution came with the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa agreed to define the yard as exactly 0.9144 metres. Because a yard contains 36 inches, one inch became exactly 0.9144 ÷ 36 metres, which works out to exactly 0.0254 metres, or 2.54 centimetres. From that day on, the inch and the centimetre were locked together by definition, not by measurement.

This is why you will sometimes see older sources describe the inch-to-centimetre conversion as approximate. They predate the agreement, or they are rounding for convenience. In modern practice, 2.54 is exact: a conversion done with it introduces no error at all, and any rounding happens only when you choose to shorten the final answer for display.

Worked Examples

Each example below shows the full multiplication, so you can check the arithmetic and reuse the method for any value of your own.

InchesCalculationCentimetres
1 in1 × 2.542.54 cm
5 in5 × 2.5412.7 cm
10 in10 × 2.5425.4 cm
12 in12 × 2.5430.48 cm
24 in24 × 2.5460.96 cm
36 in36 × 2.5491.44 cm
55 in55 × 2.54139.7 cm
65 in65 × 2.54165.1 cm

Notice the pattern in the table: 12 inches gives exactly 30.48 cm, which is why one foot equals 30.48 cm. Likewise, 36 inches gives 91.44 cm, which is exactly one yard. The inch, foot, and yard conversions all hang together because they share the same exact definition.

Fractions and decimals

Converting Fractional Inches

Real measurements are rarely whole inches. Tape measures and rulers are marked in halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths, so it helps to know how to handle a fraction. Convert the fraction to a decimal first, then multiply as usual. For example, 5½ inches is 5.5 inches, and 5.5 × 2.54 = 13.97 cm. Similarly, 7¾ inches is 7.75 inches, and 7.75 × 2.54 = 19.685 cm, which rounds to 19.69 cm at two decimal places.

A useful shortcut for fractions: one eighth of an inch is 0.3175 cm, one quarter is 0.635 cm, and one half is 1.27 cm. So a measurement of 3⅜ inches is 3 inches plus 0.9525 cm for the three eighths, giving 7.62 + 0.9525 = 8.5725 cm. Working in decimals is usually simpler, but either route lands on the same exact answer.

Rounding sensibly

How Many Decimal Places Should You Keep?

Because 2.54 is exact, the right number of decimal places depends on what you are doing, not on the conversion itself. For everyday purposes — screen sizes, luggage dimensions, craft projects — one decimal place is plenty: 27 inches becomes 68.6 cm rather than 68.58 cm. For tailoring, engineering, or laboratory work, keep two or three decimal places so you do not throw away precision you actually need. As a rule, never round in the middle of a calculation; multiply first, then round only the final answer.

In practice

When to Use Inches vs Centimetres

Use inches when the audience or industry expects them: television and monitor sizes, bicycle wheels, plumbing fittings, and paper and printing sizes in the United States are all quoted in inches. Use centimetres for metric contexts: clothing measurements outside the US, scientific work, most of Europe and Asia, and any specification where finer granularity helps. In Pakistan and the UK, you will meet both — a tailor may take measurements in inches while a fabric shop sells cloth by the metre — so being fluent in both directions is genuinely useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you convert inches to cm?
Multiply the number of inches by 2.54. Example: 10 × 2.54 = 25.4 cm.
Is 1 inch exactly 2.54 cm?
Yes. Since the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959, the inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres, which is 2.54 cm. It is a definition, not an approximation.
What is 5 feet 7 inches in cm?
First convert to inches: 5 × 12 + 7 = 67 inches. Then 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm.
How do I convert cm back to inches?
Divide centimetres by 2.54. Example: 100 ÷ 2.54 = 39.3701 inches, usually rounded to 39.37 in.
Why do some converters give slightly different answers?
They are rounding differently, not using a different factor. A converter showing 2.5 cm per inch, or rounding to whole centimetres, will differ slightly from an exact calculation — always check how many decimal places it keeps.
What is 32 inches in cm?
32 × 2.54 = 81.28 cm. This is a common television size, which is why 32-inch screens are often listed as about 81 cm.
