Gaj to Square Feet: Conversion Guide with Examples
How the traditional South Asian gaj converts to square feet, the exact factor behind it, worked examples and answers to the questions buyers and builders ask most.
If you have ever looked at a plot listing in Lahore, Delhi or Karachi, you have seen the word “gaj”. It is the everyday unit of property measurement across South Asia — but sale deeds, architects and building-material pricing all work in square feet. Converting between the two is one of the handiest skills a buyer, tenant or builder can have, and the good news is that the maths is as simple as it gets.
The Exact Formula
square feet = gaj × 9Here is why the factor is exactly 9. A gaj (also spelt “gaz”) is a traditional unit equal to one yard — 3 feet. When people say “gaj” about a plot, they mean square gaj: a square one yard on each side. A square with 3-foot sides has an area of 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. So 1 square gaj = 9 square feet, with no rounding involved.
That is also why gaj shows up in two different conversions. As a length, one gaj is 36 inches (see our gaj to inches converter). As an area, one square gaj is 9 square feet. In everyday speech, property buyers and sellers simply say “gaj” when they mean “square gaj”, so whenever the topic is land or floor space, the 9-times rule is the one to use.
Worked throughWorked Examples
Multiply the gaj figure by 9. A few common plot sizes worked out in full:
| Gaj | Calculation | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| 10 gaj | 10 × 9 | 90 sq ft |
| 25 gaj | 25 × 9 | 225 sq ft |
| 50 gaj | 50 × 9 | 450 sq ft |
| 100 gaj | 100 × 9 | 900 sq ft |
| 125 gaj | 125 × 9 | 1,125 sq ft |
| 500 gaj | 500 × 9 | 4,500 sq ft |
To convert the other way — square feet back to gaj — divide by 9 instead. A 1,800 sq ft plot is 1,800 ÷ 9 = 200 gaj. Want it instant? Our gaj to square feet converter does the maths as you type.
In practiceWhen to Use Gaj vs Square Feet
Use gaj when talking about land the way locals do — plot listings, estate-agent conversations, and informal area descriptions across India and Pakistan. Use square feet wherever precision or money is involved: sale deeds and registry documents, architects’ floor plans, tiles and flooring quoted per square foot, and construction estimates, where “per sq ft” is the standard rate.
The gaj also sits inside a family of traditional land units you will meet in the same listings: about 30.25 square gaj make one marla, 20 marla make one kanal, and 605 square gaj make one kanal. Our Pakistan land measurement units guide and the marla to gaz converter cover the rest of the family.
